Baidu to deploy conversational AI across search, in-car entertainment and more

Baidu today revealed more details about its much-anticipated intelligent Ernie Bot, widely seen as the search giant's counterpart to ChatGPT. Ernie Bot is built atop Baidu's large language model Erniethat released in 2019. In May last year, the third generation of Ernie launched. Here's how Baidu plans to integrate Ernie Bot into its ecosystem of services, said the firm's founder and CEO Robin Li in a letter to staff today. "The integration of ERNIE Bot with Baidu Search will lead to a generational change in the search experience."


Baidu plans to start mass-producing autonomous vehicles around 2019

Like its US counterparts, Chinese internet titan Baidu has been working on autonomous vehicle research for years. After a failed partnership with BMW, Baidu opened itself up to teaming up with other companies, notably bringing on NVIDIA to power its Apollo self-driving car program. The internet giant has another partner now: Chinese automaker BAIC, which will pair its cars with Baidu's tech to start mass production of level three autonomous vehicles around 2019, followed by L4 vehicles around 2021. Those are lower grades of automation than the fully-autonomous, no-steering-wheel level five'robo taxis' that many automakers are salivating over (and NVIDIA claims its dedicated new AI computer can power). But those, like Intel's partnership with Waymo for L4/L5 vehicles, are mostly eventual goals.

Baidu, the Chinese-based internet services conglomerate, has made several major announcements about its upcoming IoT projects. The company's plans center on a revamped artificial intelligence (AI) platform, which the company hopes will enable it to effectively increase its presence in the world of the IoT. Baidu plans to use this revamped AI platform to develop a voice assistant similar to Amazon's Echo, reports Bloomberg. It will be working with speaker manufacturer Harman Industries to develop the device, which it hopes will allow users to order food, summon a ride, or control smart home products via voice commands.
